Once viewed as the ultimate wilderness, it is increasingly apparent that the oceans have been heavily affected by human activities, including over-exploitation of fisheries, bycatch, and the degradation of entire ecosystems.  Our ability to better understand the ecological changes occurring in the global ocean and their implications for the management of marine resources requires a detailed understanding of the spatial and temporal patterns of marine species distribution and diversity.
