Lake Level Fluctuations in Lake Victoria, East Africa - Implications ...

Orbital forcing, glaciers, and temperature changes are not the only factors to affect Lake Victoria in the Holocene. Human impact plays a big role. First figure depicts density of human population around the lake. Second figure depicts agricultural production (shown as a percentage of the 1960 value) over time, with various significant dates marked. For example, we see cultural events such as the discovery of the lake by European explorers and the invasion of the railroad into Kenya and Uganda, respectively. We also see environmental events, such as the introduction of Nile perch for commercial fishing, decreases in indigenous fish stocks as the Nile perch takes over, and the blooms of pelagic cyanobacteria.
